Center for Civic Engagement, Fall 2018 Graduate Internship as Assistant to the Co-Director of Active Citizenship and Community Partnerships

The 25-hour-per-week position pays $5,000 for each of the fall semester, spring semester, and summer. Duties include managing a roster of 14 undergraduate fellows, facilitating relationships between the fellows and community partners, and organizing the logistics for some of our larger programs, including the Hempstead High School Tutoring/Mentoring Initiative and Herstory Writers Workshop programs.

The Active Citizenship and Community Partnerships Intern

  • Oversees an upwards of 15 fellows in their work for the Center for Civic Engagement. The GA acts as a liaison between students and 10-12 community Partners.
  • Supports the needs of the Community Partners
    •  Matches their needs to resources at Hofstra
    • Monitors the progress of fellows working with community partners
    • Maintains and develops community partnerships
  • Organizes, plans and markets community-based programs
  • Provides logistical support for committee meetings and events
  • Manages a diverse team of undergraduate fellows by:
    • Participating in hiring and evaluation processes
    • Facilitating weekly student meetings
    • Holding regular office hours (min. 10h/wk, including at least one evening)
    • Providing support for and advising student initiatives

The intern will gain experience and training through building competencies in the following areas:

  • Forming and strengthening groups, networks, and organizations
  • Developing leadership and team building skills
  • Supporting community-based programs that foster civic engagement
  • Promoting conflict resolution and social transformation
  • Building connections within and between communities

Matriculated graduate students across all disciplines from the University with a passion for nonviolence, social justice sustainability, the democratic process, building bridges with the community and thinking globally are encouraged to apply for the Civic Literacy Graduate Assistantship. Marketing Intern

Reports to:     Chief Marketing and Communications Officer

Summary of Position: This internship will provide the candidate with an opportunity to develop real-life skills working for the Marketing and Girl Experience and Community Partnerships departments of Girl Scout of Nassau County. During this time the candidate will work on a variety of multi-department and function projects including the Gold Award Ceremony, celebrating the achievement of the highest award in Girl Scouting.  The position will start in May 2018 and last through August 2018.This is an unpaid position, designed to fulfill the requirements of most college and university credit-earning courses.   

Accountabilities:

  • Learn and oversee the logistics of the Gold Award Ceremony, including developing necessary collateral materials for the day, tickets, programs, award certificates and pins, attend and assist with set up of the event and coordination of activities for the day under the direction of the Director Girl Experience and Community Partnerships, coordinate post event materials including media CD’s, event web page and social media postings
  • Work with graphic artist to develop PowerPoint presentations that will be used during the ceremony
  • Work with Public Relations company to provide them with information and photos for press releases, before and after the event
  • Work with Interactive Media Marketing Senior Manager to develop content for the website and social media pages

Other Responsibilities:

  • Attend programs, meetings and education opportunities as offered by your supervisor.
  • Assist Marketing Department with other projects as they arise during the duration of the internship.

Qualifications:

  • High School graduate.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft and Adobe computer software

specializes in cable television networks/programs. Clients include, Amazon Studios,

Our publicists promote our clients through print, electronic and on line media as well as
special events. You will gain much needed hands-on experience by working in a team

About Aperture’s Program:

Aperture, a not-for-profit foundation, connects the photo community and its audiences with the most inspiring work, the sharpest ideas, and with each other—in print, in person, and online.

Aperture’s Work Scholar Program welcomes individuals to engage in Aperture’s programs and contribute to the editing, design, production, circulation, sales, and marketing of photography’s most significant publications; the development of major traveling exhibitions; educational programs for children and adults; the creation of web content; and all other business operations essential to a non-profit organization.

Interns serve on a volunteer basis for which they receive a lunch stipend of $300 per month full-time, as well as complimentary copies of Aperture magazine (stipends for part-time work scholars vary depending on their time commitment). We do not offer summer or semester-long internships. Applicants must make their own living arrangements and should have sufficient financial resources to cover their living expenses. College credit is available for this program. A full-time (five days per week, unless otherwise noted), six-month time commitment is necessary, with the potential to extend the internship for an additional six months.

Alliance For Women In Media

The Alliance for Women in Media is seeking a student(s) interested in an internship program to impact and influence this trailblazing organization. Through recognition events such as the Gracies and Women in Series as well as creating programming, AWM is creating relevant and meaningful connections for women in media.

Intern Projects:

  • Write/commission a blog every two weeks on topics as designated by AWM Staff
  • Research events and publications that match the AWM market and find vendors that would be potential sponsors for AWM and the Gracies. Locate an appropriate contact for staff to reach out to.
  • Research media companies that are not currently entering for Gracie awards and find an appropriate contact to reach out to for an invite to enter.
  • Write a piece on the history of the Beverly Wilshire and Cipriani – why they fit The Gracies as event locations.
  • Edit the Behind the Bio series and the Women in Sports pieces and put into a format that could be downloaded. Also research and recommend most effective web platform for promotion and usage.
  • Continue researching “Where are they now” for the Gracies. Look at past Gracie honorees and capture stories of those who have moved to new positions or roles that would be relevant or noteworthy. Step two would be finding contact information for the most noteworthy “where are they now” stories to reach out to for interviews or quotes.
  • Research articles, research pieces or other newsworthy content that would be relevant to include in Fast Forward newsletter, social or on the website.
  • Interview Salon and Gracies Chairs for website.
  • Create content depository for weekly Facebook posts with an interesting article about a past Gracie winner or a link to a past Gracie winning piece.
  • Research and collect Facebook, Twitter and Instagram handles for all 2016 Gracie winners and put in a spreadsheet.
  • Research and create a database of colleges, universities or other resources to promote AWMF scholarships and student opportunities.

Candidate Requirements:

  • An undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in journalism, public relations, English or related field.

The Intern is responsible for assisting with implementing and monitoring projects within a specific set of accounts under the direction of the supervisor.  S/he works closely with and supports the needs of the account teams.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
